Unusual pets

Colorful lizards known as bearded dragons are popular pets for children, but they can carry salmonella. In recent years, infections have been traced to the pets, especially affecting the children who handle them. Another unusual pet, the hedgehog, caused a salmonella outbreak in 2012, the CDC says. The infection related to hedgehogs affected 26 people, killing one. Experts caution people to have children wash their hands thoroughly after handling the pets, or even objects in the vicinity, such as lizards' tanks and equipment.
